The Short & Long Answer

A Peek Inside The Tin Can
A Peek Inside The Tin Can
I often get asked whether I have a shop, a physical shop that is, as opposed to my online store or in-person events that I attend. The short answer is yes, I do indeed have a physical store where customers can come and see my work. However, the longer answer is a little more complicated, involving a little story about the space and the community around it.

The physical store is based near the lovely village of Torcross, Devon, and is aptly named The Tin Can. This gorgeous shop is not just any ordinary retail space; it is a creatively converted shipping container that has been designed and situated on the grounds of Stokeley Farm Shop. The Tin Can is a vibrant hub for creativity and collaboration, where a group of talented local artisans have come together to share the space. Among us are an amazing group of women who contribute to the diverse range of products available. What's particularly special is that half of us take turns managing the shop meaning you can meet the makers, dedicating a day each week.

This collaboration celebrates community, allowing each artist to showcase her work while also promoting the talents of her fellow artisans. Visitors to The Tin Can can expect to find an array of handcrafted goods, from exquisite jewelry and handmade textiles to locally sourced art and bespoke home decor items. Each product tells a story, not only of the craftsmanship involved but also what inspires us.

This gem is nestled in a breathtaking location well known for its natural beauty, with the nearby beach creating a serene environment that draws both locals and tourists time and time again.

You Can Also Find My Art In The Cafe At Stokeley Farm Shop

The Place

Stokeley Farm Shop is a family-run establishment dedicated to providing the highest quality local produce. This gorgeous shop is not just a place to buy groceries and locally sourced produce. One of the standout features of Stokeley is its café, which serves exceptionally tasty, well-cooked food. I can personally vouch for the menu, as I try to resist the temptation every week during my shop visit. The café again uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Did I mention the brewery located on-site? It is called The Taphouse showcasing South Hams Drinks and has a welcoming rustic bar that is not only perfect for enjoying a decent drink but also dog-friendly, making it an ideal spot for pet owners to relax. The Taphouse features their own beers and elderflower presse, all brewed on-site. In addition to the farm shop and café, the site also houses a garden centre known as Green Garden Spaces. This is expertly run by the husband and wife team, Emma and Jonathan Hutchinson, who bring over 18 years of experience in horticulture to the table. Their extensive knowledge about plants, gardening techniques, and landscape design is invaluable. Stokeley Farm Shop also has a micro bakery known as Artigrano, which operates from an adorable shepherd's hut. This bakery specializes in Italian-style bread that is not only fresh but also made from organic ingredients. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the air is an irresistible. Lastly, for those in need of a little pampering, there is a delightful hairdresser on-site called Eden. This salon provides a range of hair services, from cuts and colors to styling, all delivered by skilled local professionals.

We aren't the only independent shop on site, as there is also a popular lifestyle store known as Relish specialising in offering a wide array of beautifully restored antique and reclaimed furniture pieces each item selected for its unique character and craftsmanship. Furthermore, there is a coastal-inspired collective called The Shed, which showcases an assortment of sustainable goods. This enchanting shop features an eclectic mix of items, including beautifully decorated shells that evoke the spirit of the sea, as well as exquisite cashmere and silver jewellery that adds a touch of elegance to any outfit. Another unique gem in our community is another shepherd's hut - a shop for the talented jeweller, Becky Brine - queen of shiny things. Her collection is mesmerising, featuring really unique handcrafted jewellery. Oh, did I mention that there is free parking available?

In addition to these fantastic shops, Stokeley Farm Shop also features a dynamic Pop Up Shop that can be hired for a week at a time. This engaging space is designed to change regularly, showcasing the incredible talents of local crafters and artisans. Each week brings something new, that encourages visitors to discover the latest tennant. You can find me there two to three times a year, showcasing all my makes in one hit. I love these opportunities allowing me to present new work processes I am exploring and engaging with all the visitors, sharing my passion for my craft, and gaining instant feedback on my creations. The conversations not only inspire me but also help me understand what resonates with them, making each visit a helpful experience.

Back to The Tin Can, our little shop that I am proud to be a part of, is not just an ordinary store; this vibrant blue container as I mentioned has been creatively transformed. All the makers are located within 20 miles of the store, each artisan brings their own style and expertise. Among the talented artisans, we have a remarkable seamstress creating colourful, contemporary children's clothing under the name Wifflepigs, inspired by her son's nickname. Then there is Sally Wilkinson, a true paper magician whose work spans from intricate origami garlands to stunning paper sculptures and art pieces that captivate the imagination. Another is Cranford Designs, a weaver whose skill in crafting woven baskets and bowls, which are perfect for both functional use and decorative display. I, myself, Lou Griffiths Art, a pyrography artist showing my latest nature-inspired wooden art and homeware. My collection includes crafted candle holders, unique doorstops, chopping boards utilising discarded and recycled wood plus prints, greeting cards, and tea towels. All designed to bring a touch of nature into everyday life. Additionally, we have Planet Saz, an enamel jeweller known for her signature colourful to every piece of jewellery she creates. Tinks Pottery is another gem, specialising in earthenware domestic pots that are not only functional but are also adorned with bold, eye-catching colours. We also feature Oliver & Purchase, who creates handmade leather bags and accessories that blend style with practicality. Last but certainly not least, we have Helen Matthews, a talented fused glass artist whose stunning makes are so popular as gifts. As you can see, there is an abundance of talented makers involved in The Tin Can, and this is just a glimpse of the many artisans whose work fills our shelves. There are even more creators whose contributions make this shop so whether you are looking to treat yourself, find a unique memoir for your holiday, or select a thoughtful present for someone special, The Tin Can is the perfect one stop shop catering for all ages and tastes.

Torcross Village, Slapton Ley and Slapton Sands

The Area

What I haven't mentioned is the location, which truly deserves a more detailed mention. We are situated next to the remarkable Slapton Ley Nature Reserve and the stunning Slapton Sands. Slapton Ley is not just any body of water; it is the largest natural freshwater lake in the entire southwest of England, renowned for its breathtaking beauty and variety of wildlife that inhabits it. A haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, offering the chance to observe a myriad of species in their natural habitat, including migratory birds and rare plants. Running along the front edge of this picturesque landscape is Slapton Sands, a magnificent three-kilometer stretch of fine shingle beach that visitors can enjoy beautiful walks. At one end of lies the charming Torcross village, where you can find the Stokeley Farm shop, as you continue along the coast you can view the impressive Start Point lighthouse overlooking Start Bay. Then you'll find yourself moving towards the town of Kingsbridge, known for its bustling market history. At the opposite end of Slapton Sands are the villages of Strete and Stoke Fleming leading to Dartmouth. This area is characterised by its stunning coastal views and dramatic cliffs that overlook the waters of the English Channel, you could be mistaken for thinking you are in the Mediterrean. So as you can tell this place is most definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
